You ever learn a new phrase and then want to use it quickly? I learned the phrase "latitudinal limits" while looking up facts about this bird. Anyway, these hawks are found all over North America, but even they have their latitudinal limits and they are absent from the high arctic. Latitudinal limits.
The thing about the brown-headed Cowbird is that you can tell it's a brown-headed Cowbird even if you don't have your good camera...because of the brown-headedness.
The osprey's outer toe is reversible, allowing them to grasp their prey with two toes in front and two behind, and beat paper twice in a game of rock, paper, scissors.
It was hard to capture this bird flying and hunting fish...but I had the last laugh.
These owls were originally called the "winged tiger" or "tiger of the air" by early naturalists. I don't have a quip, that's just a really cool name.
AKA Grimace Martin.
